Do You feel like Your Weight has Plateaued?

 

Have your bathroom scales frozen at a set weight even though you have increased your training?

Here are three things to consider:

  1. Are you measuring accurately? At the very least you will want to know your bodyfat percentage. It would also be good to know how much of your total body fat consists of visceral fat. To be thorough, your muscle mass is also important to know and if you really want a complete picture it would be a great idea to measure your bone mass and body water levels.

    These measurements allow you to accurately track your health and assess your training effects on your total body composition, rather than just your whole body weight on the scale. As you increase your training your weight on the scale may stabilise even though your body fat percentage has dropped ✅ and your muscle mass has increased ✅.

  2. Too much cardio can erode your lean muscle mass. Lean muscle mass is your freedom. It is essential for increasing your metabolism and allowing you to burn more fuel (food) at rest.

    Cardio training encourages your body to become more endurance-focused. It is fantastic but you need to recognise that it can encourage the body to store energy as fat. Storing energy as fat provides fuel for your body to keep you going for all the k’s your running. It’s a survival mechanism - your body is trying to assist you.

    Cardio training tends to increase our appetite. If you are not dialed into healthy portion sizes or healthy carbohydrate choices, this may lean into unnecessary snacking or overeating.

  3. Weight resistant exercise, and particularly lifting heavy weights, build muscle by causing little microfibre tears that require nutrients and tools (food, water, rest) to rebuild them stronger than they were previously ✅. The muscle biological response is to hold onto more glycogen and water in anticipation of the next time you train. This is awesome and necessary but it may not reflect an immediate drop on your bathroom scales.

Let’s move away from the trail of being overweight, body shape dissatisfaction, the daily dose of pharmaceutical and social drugs, persistent envy, unhappiness, anxiety, depression, and a life full of pressure to keep up, skip steps, and rush.

Living without awareness and intention creates pressures that we are not doing, we are not moving fast enough, as bosses, workers, weekend warriors, friends, lovers, parents, siblings, or grandparents. We have to be able and willing to step outside the pull of unhealthy and unhealthful cultural norms and make the critical space to do our meaningful thinking.

The first thing I need people to take in is if they are going to work with me or read my work because for me this re-frames the core of moving through all obstacles we have around stress, rush, health, weight, etc … The very blantant truth is that living under the guise of society’s expectations - is not living.

We have been fed a narrative that stepping outside or away from norms is the wrong way to exist and this narrative furthers unhappiness, unhealthiness, pressure, and a life that is too fast to enjoy.
