How to Stay Motivated & Calm in an Unhealthy World

“It is no measure of health to be well-adjusted to a profoundly sick society.” ~ Krishnamurti

As a child, my apprehensiveness to fully engage and buy into a society that appeared so destructively unhealthy was a bitter pill that my dad found difficult to swallow.  I was unable to adjust to a prospective future of rush, addiction to all that's prodded in our capitalistic world of mindless existing, the squandering of hard-earned money on unhealthful pursuits to escape the claws of an uncaring life. The fast decline of a healthy body and mind. Chronic illness (many have more than one), overweight or obesity, a daily dose of pharmaceutical drugs, persistent envy, and unhappiness, showed every sign of being normal. But these downward symptoms would not exist if we were in a life we really cared about.

Going against the tide of our culturally unhealthy living is a daunting prospect. But to thrive or even just be healthy in our sick society means being different, going against the grain, and defying the norms. Being healthy requires running counter to society's standard way of doing business.

It's almost certain that if you aren't breaking the magnetic pull towards society's unhealthful living, you are undeniably breaking yourself.

In reality, half the population are overindulging and the other half are on a diet. We overindulge, choose the wrong foods, we’re less active, and let stress and anxiety take over our lives. So, why are we not taking care of ourselves? Why are we overweight, ill, and struggling every day?

We pack our days so full that if even one little thing goes wrong, our whole schedule is thrown off. We take on extra activities and obligations because we see other people doing them and acting as they can easily handle them.

We compare and contrast our accomplishments to everybody else’s—and pile the pressure on ourselves, when we don’t feel like we measure up.

If this doesn’t describe your own experience…you’re lucky.

What are your options when you're in that world? Do you have to just go along with it? Just accept it?

It takes awareness, courage, & the determination to live a better life. None of this is easy. But we need to challenge normal, because why would we want to be normal if it means pre-diabetes, thyroid disease, obesity, or a heart condition? Take responsibility for your own health and well-being because if you let social and occupational pressures push you around, sooner or later, you'll reach your breaking point.

Some of us will have bigger hills to climb. It may surprise some to find that the support they need has always been there. While others will have to dig deep inside themselves to find the strength to live better.

The balance: a unique place between you and your world. You know it when you get there, it feels safe.

If awareness is how we stay grounded amidst all this craziness we can’t control…balance is what we work toward within the parameters of what we can control. We are most in control of how we allocate our limited, finite resources to deal with all the different pressures, obligations, and demands we face in life.

Balance is about giving your time and energy proportionately.  It means setting boundaries, saying no, and making time for guilt-free leisure, because you understand your limits, understand that you can't do everything, and know there's nothing wrong with that.

If you are ready to defy unhealthy norms and conventions in order to achieve a high level of vitality, resilience, and autonomy, let me jumpstart you with my short online course …

My contribution is a union of nutrition, mindfulness, meditation, breathwork & movement intertwined with behaviour change and how it impacts a life worth living.

As a health and fitness professional, I want to shift the paradigm toward one of self-love and self-care instead of an aesthetic insecurity-based industry. Let’s move away from the trail of being overweight, body shape dissatisfaction, the daily dose of pharmaceutical and social drugs, persistent envy, unhappiness, anxiety, depression, and a life full of pressure to keep up, skip steps, and rush.

Living without awareness and intention creates pressures that we are not doing, we are not moving fast enough, as bosses, workers, weekend warriors, friends, lovers, parents, siblings, or grandparents. We have to be able and willing to step outside the pull of unhealthy and unhealthful cultural norms and make the critical space to do our meaningful thinking.

The first thing I need people to take in is if they are going to work with me or read my work because for me this re-frames the core of moving through all obstacles we have around stress, rush, health, weight, etc … The very blantant truth is that living under the guise of society’s expectations - is not living.

We have been fed a narrative that stepping outside or away from norms is the wrong way to exist and this narrative furthers unhappiness, unhealthiness, pressure, and a life that is too fast to enjoy.

Wherever we are, this is life—it’s happening right now, and I’ve decided that I am not going to rush through it and I invite you to join me today …
